THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE THEORY: “Batman’s Five Stages of Grief”
[M4B:] Hello everybody, welcome back to Brick Theory, where there can never be enough psychology when talking about Batman. After seeing The LEGO Batman Movie, we watch the Caped Crusader learn to conquer his fear of being part of a family and embrace the power of teamwork. But in order to do this he struggles with various people and himself after the loss of his parents in that fateful Crime Alley (perhaps not the best place to set up shop). That’s right, we’re going to compare the Dark Knight’s journey to a new family by using the Five Stages of Grief. And spoilers are coming our way, so make sure you watch the movie before tuning back here. Joining Maniac4Bricks today we have Matt`s MOCs. So Matt, what are the Five Stages of Grief?
[Matt’s MOCS:] The Five Stages of Grief is a model by Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross [pronounced cube-ler] which outlines the emotional states a person experiences when a hero (he or she) is faced with a situation or most commonly, death. Proposed in 1969, these stages are described as Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and finally Acceptance. depending on how the situation such as with batman dealing with the loss of being a vigilante to then sending everyone away so he could save the day alone but ends up in the phantom zone. These actions follow the pattern.
[M4B:] His denial starts when he hides his feelings from Alfred about missing his parents. Alfred who raised Batman and serves directly under him knows his pain keeps him from starting a new family or relationships with other people outside of the Waynes. When he worked alone on everything from the loss of his parents the fear of losing those he cared for made him want to work alone and feel disconnected from Alfred. It is so that if he died or if anyone died it would be less painful than if someone like a son or the love of his life (maybe batgirl ) died he would never have to live through it again. Batman denies the Joker as his arch nemesis so that he doesn’t have grief over losing them. Batman continues to deny when he is supposed to attend Commissioner Gordon’s retirement party. In the limo before appearing as Bruce Wayne we see Batman in his “armored face disguise”, I mean cowl. Despite the billionaire lifestyle, Batman refuses to live for the limelight as Bruce Wayne and prefers his vigilante stardom as Batman. He’s denying a part of himself, his natural born identity, that he inherited from his parents.
[Matt’s MOCS:] Aside from being brooding, Batman is also very angry. It was well known on how his fighting style in both the canon LEGO MOVIE and in this THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE is aggressive and shows no mercy. He has an obsession with Hard Rock, which is commonly referred to anger both in a symbolic sense but a literal sense as the music is louder and excessive in notes being played. Notice how in the Batcave as well as in fight scenes Batman has his own mix of hard rock playing to fuel his anger. The anger to evil keeps Batman on his feet as a hero, to avoid ambushes like the one on his parents in an alley on christmas (who doesn't know the origin story by now even Alfred knows that after some 75 years) plus he is shown to be a rude person, from the Justice League not even recognizing he was there at the party, He called robin expendable and acted against barbra gordon every step of the way. Trusting the Bat Rope over the commissioners piloting skills! To quote the brick from the phantom zone “you are unlike any villain I have met where the others had reasons behind their acts you don`t” this sums up his treatment of others.
[M4B:] After Anger, Batman goes to Bargain for escaping the loss of his parents. In the second half of the movie, he realizes he cannot fight the Joker and the Uber criminals alone. In the Phantom Zone he makes a deal with Phyllis that he will bring back all of the criminals within 24 hours before submitting himself as a “bad guy”. To do this, he pleads for the aid of Robin, Alfred and Batgirl. He even takes up Barbara Gordon’s offer of letting the Rogues help fight the Joker as a temporary truce. Even as Gotham City is tearing apart like the cheese off a pizza, Batman negotiates, or bargains, for the Joker to help him repair the city. Through these actions, Batman begins to learn that he needs to rely on others for help and by having a family of superheroes he can keep Gotham City safe.
[Matt’s MOCS:] Depression starts when at first Joker hatches his plan. Throw himself and all but harley in jail. And it works. The sad batman now has lost his hero power as there was no more crime to fight against which leads to him sitting sad in the bat cave or watching the villains do there daily in jail stuff such as exercising. He tries many times now to be the hero but no avail, his depression rain led him to cause the bigger issue by sending joker to the phantom zone. There he sat in jail where they all say he belonged, he was sad for that time but robin tried to be a son to a dad who treated him like dirt. It then follows again even when surrounded he couldn’t say it which lead to him going in the zone. When he came back he was happy for a moment but the depression came back soon. When He knew he had to go back he tried not to look back at the others. But he had to. After saying much great things gaining him real respect. He even hugged robin! And that leads to the final stage of this crazy train model of grief.
[M4B:] And finally Batman comes to Accept his reliance on others and the need to be part of family again. Not only does he enlist the help of Batgirl, Robin, Alfred and the Rogues, but he even comes to admit to “hating” the Joker too. He even accepts his return to the Phantom Zone, only to find his good deeds have erased him as a “bad guy”. His acceptance of other people into his life allows him to move on from his parent’s death all those years ago.
Now before we finish up here we will note that some sources list an additional 2 stages of grief: Shock or Disbelief and Guilt. Now truly Bruce would have felt shock as a child when his parents were killed at the theater, but I don’t think he would feel guilt for their murder. Perhaps his guilt derives from sending his Batfamily to Bludhaven and pushing away their offers to help him.
We do realize not every one of these stages happens in stage order in the movie, but no one said it had to. People can grieve over loved ones in all kinds of ways and at different times. Maybe one person’s first reaction is anger while another is bargaining. Either way, it’s great to see LEGO Batman has finally healed from his painful isolation in favor of a new Batfamily.
