[intro]
Hello everybody, this is Maniac4Bricks. Before the theatrical release of The LEGO Batman Movie, I came up with 5 predictions and questions about the movie, to fuel my theorist brain. Shortly after its release, I did an exclusive video on our Facebook page [logo, plug]. But I have to admit, having now picked up a home copy which I can pause and rewind, I was actually WRONG [trump wrong] on several of my reactions seeing the movie in theaters. So let’s go over my questions again and see if we can refine the answers provided by The LEGO Batman Movie. And remember there will be spoilers and easter eggs unveiled in this video, so please watch and enjoy the movie first before we go forward. I highly recommend it.
5. Why does everyone except Robin have a belt piece? And why does Batman change belts and not Robin? The movie doesn’t give a clear explanation for this. The best way I can sum it up while giving some continuity of The LEGO Movies, is that the Batman outfit from this movie is different from the 2014 film. As for Robin, keep in mind that he is younger than most of the other characters seen wearing belts are adults [highlight Alfred’s Ultimate Batmobile uniform is not a BatSuit]. Perhaps that plays into some of the characters and a smaller printed belt is a better fit for the child hero of the film. Or maybe Batman needs to accompany that 9th ab, but either way, it’s not a gamechanger detail.
4. How much will the Justice League be involved with The LEGO Batman Movie? Hardly, barely at all. A few jabs at Superman and Iron Man, that party scene from the trailers, and that’s it. HowItShouldHaveEnded did a nice parody to make the Justice League involvement more special to the plot, link in the description. Also there’s a short animation on the DVD extras of Batman being rejected from Justice League of America because his voice actor, Will Arnett, is Canadian. Good joke there for bonus content.
3. Will every set from the theme be represented brick for brick? Another hard pass [Batman hard pass] on this one but there are more sets accurate to the movie than not. The only ones inaccurate are as follows: [breathe in] [https://brickset.com/sets/theme-The-LEGO-Batman-Movie] The Mini Batmobile and Mini Batwing are not present at all and are fun microsized polybags. The Phantom Zone has much larger security bots than the set appearance. The Joker Battle Training doesn’t appear at all. Disco Batman and Tears of a Batman are not used in the movie but are likely to hang in Bruce Wayne’s enormous wardrobe. The sets combining to make Gotham Electric are accurate for the vehicles but not for the power plant itself and the bomb is smaller than in the film. Catwoman Catcycle Chase has no diamond store visible in the movie. Killer Croc Tail-Gator is seen but not the miniature Batboat, but may appear with other Batvehicles in the Batcave like the Whirly Bat, Bat Hawk and Flying Batmobile, but not confirmed. The Batcave set, speaking of which, is obviously a downgrade of the reel deal [“reel deal”]. I have no idea which of the 3 Bat Signals in set form is actually in the movie, if any of them. At best it looks like the version from the Ultimate Batmobile set. The CMF line is mostly represented but again, some BatSuits are probably on a clothes rack in the Batcave. [sigh of relief] That should cover everything setwise, what’s our next question?
2. How does this movie relate to The LEGO Movie? I wonder how many people missed some of the opening details from the heist connecting this movie to its 2014 predecessor. The Gotham City of this universe is built on unsteady platforms illustrated by a table, much like what Emmet saw in The Main Upstairs’ display. Even more on Emmet, while explaining the chaos of collapsing the city, a clip of Emmet falling through the Eternal Abyss plays on GCN. So we now have a solid sequel to the LEGO Movie. How does it explain the vast difference of Gotham City and Brickburg? Well they could be on different tables, or Finn and his father reconstructed the town and for a short while played with DC Comics minifigures all around their new un-kragled setup. We also see citizens watching the news with familiar torsos that appeared in Brickburg from The LEGO Movie [show on screen Blacktron Fan, train conductor, ice cream vendor, post office, Plumber Joe uniform, “NinjagoTown”, “The Bionicle Mo…”].
Why do the Gremlins and Wicked Witch appear in the movie? Well as I said in the beginning, spoilers and easter eggs are aplenty [Egghead], and surprisingly, they and many others are involved with the plot. The Joker transports himself to the Phantom Zone to unleash these and many other criminals on Gotham, all part of a new plan to gain Batman’s arch-enemy status. It’s not spoken how or why those criminals wind up there, but it is important to note that several of them also appear in LEGO Dimensions, like I said before [Wicked Witch and Monkey, Gremlins, Voldemort, dinosaurs, Sauron, Daleks, Agent Smith]. Even some of the other minifigures have appeared before in The LEGO Movie [medusa, vampire, swamp monster, shark] only more evil now. And according to Dimensions, multiple personalities can collide from alternate worlds [two Batmen, Robins, Jokers, ]. What I like about its portrayal is that Gotham City pans out to a frame of another reality [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXCw4YgJebA] where the Phantom Zone lies. This matches up with the DC version in which the Phantom Zone is a higher plane of existence over most of the known comic book universe. Even being described as another, wait for it….dimension. So it looks like the Brick Theorists train is ready for a new passenger, choo choo! But that will be for another day, especially our evergrowing crossover guide. There’s a reason why it still hasn’t been published, it keep growing and is hard to make a big visual for it! We will find a way though, we’ve made pretty far on it already.
Thank you for watching this video and I hope you learned something new about The LEGO Batman Movie! We’ve got more Batman action coming down the pipelines so be sure to subscribe and follow our social media so you’ll know when our next video airs. Now if you’ll excuse me I have lots of timelines and crossovers to sort out. See you soon!
